Chocolate and Orange Scones

Inspired by the Comic Relief Great British Bake Off I made some lovely Chocolate and Orange Scones. I have never made scones before but realised today that they are super easy to make, ideal for baking beginners!

For about 25 scones:
700g self raising flour (for all continental bakers: flour plus 2-3 teaspoons baking powder)
150g butter
150g caster sugar
150g chocolate drops
130ml milk
2 large oranges

Preheat the oven to 200°C.

Sift the flour into a large mixing bowl. Cut shavings of the weighed out butter into the bowl. Rub the butter into the flour with your hands until you get a breadcrumb-like consistency.

Add sugar, chocolate drops and milk. Wash the oranges under hot (boiling!) water and zest with a fine grater (microplane if you have one). Add the zest and juice of the oranges mix the dough together.

Be careful not to overwork the dough, knead together as little as possible.

Roll out the dough to a thickness of 2-3cm. Cut out scones with a small glass or a round crinkle cookie cutter (5-6cm diameter).

Place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and brush with some milk (or eggwash).

Bake until golden brown (about 10 minutes, depends on size and oven).

In England scones are served with clotted cream. On the continent you could use whipped cream or creme double instead 🙂
